We host stag and hen parties almost every weekend. And after seeing so many come through, we've noticed two things. The weekends that go really well always have one thing in common: someone took the time to plan ahead. And the ones that go wrong almost always fall apart for the same reasons: an activity that kills the mood early on, a group standing in the heat with no idea what to do next, or an organiser who covered everyone's costs upfront and spent the evening chasing people for transfers.
This guide is what we'd tell someone who came to us and asked: "how do we make sure it actually goes well?" Practical advice, an itinerary that works, and a few things that don't get mentioned enough but genuinely make a difference to the day.
💳 The thing nobody thinks to check before booking
The payment question is one we see come up at the last minute all the time, and it's a shame because it's exactly where a lot of organisers make things harder for themselves than they need to be.
Most activities ask you to settle the full amount upfront, which means you're covering everyone and then spending days chasing your money back. For a group of 10 to 15 people, that can mean several hundred euros out of your pocket. It's awkward, it creates tension, and it has nothing to do with the actual stag or hen party.
How it works at Clock Escape
You book by paying only your own spot. Everyone else pays theirs directly at the desk when they arrive. No minimum upfront to hold the rooms, no bank transfers to organise in advance, no reconciliation at the end. It sounds simple because it is. It's also the thing organisers thank us for most often.
🗝️ Why an escape room works so well for stag and hen parties
We're obviously not neutral on this, but we can explain why it tends to work better than most activities for this format.
An escape room is one hour where the whole group is genuinely together, working towards the same goal, with the clock ticking. There's no hanging back and watching others get on with it. Everyone's involved. And it produces moments that turn into stories: the laughter, the split-second decisions under pressure, finding out very quickly who stays calm and who goes to pieces. Those are the moments people still bring up at the wedding speech.
There's also a practical benefit in May and June that doesn't get mentioned enough: our rooms are air-conditioned. When it's 30 degrees outside and you've got a full evening ahead of you, spending an hour somewhere cool in the middle of the afternoon before heading out is genuinely useful.
For stag and hen parties, two of our rooms tend to stand out depending on the group:
🕵️ The Spy : for mixed groups
This is our most accessible room and by far the most popular with stag and hen groups. The premise is a spy mission, the puzzles are varied and build in difficulty, and the pacing is well balanced. What matters for a big group is that everyone finds something to do: there's always something for the logical thinkers, the observers, the people who spot things others miss. Nobody ends up standing in the corner watching the others play. Difficulty: 3/5.
🗿 The Cursed Temple : for groups who want a real challenge
This is our most physical room. We won't say too much to avoid spoiling it, but expect to move around, squeeze through tight spots, and lose your bearings. It's intense, it's disorienting in the best way, and it's exactly the kind of experience people are still talking about at the wedding. Available from age 14, not suitable for claustrophobes. Difficulty: 4/5.
⚔️ Duel Mode : our favourite format for bigger groups
If there are about ten of you, Duel Mode is genuinely worth it: two teams, two different rooms, same duration. At the end, the debrief turns into a sort of press conference where each team explains how they handled (or didn't handle) the puzzles. That's usually when the evening really gets going. We can take up to 15 players simultaneously across our 3 rooms. For larger groups, give us a call and we'll figure out how to make it work.
🗺️ The no-brainer itinerary: zero logistics, 100% city centre
The real luxury of a stag or hen party in central Bordeaux is never having to organise transport. Everything is on foot or by tram. Nobody has to stay sober to drive. Nobody's calling a cab at midnight for a group of twelve. Here's how we'd plan the day if it were ours to organise.
11:00 · Brunch, no skimping
The Saint-Rémi neighbourhood or the Chartrons district both have good spots for group brunches. Book in advance. Not because it's impossible to find somewhere last-minute, but because showing up at 11am with ten people and no reservation usually means losing an hour standing around while everyone gets hungry and the day hasn't even started.
2:00 pm · Escape room at Clock Escape
We're a 2-minute walk from Rue Sainte-Catherine. Arrive a few minutes early for the welcome, that's also when everyone settles their own spot, so it all happens calmly without you having to manage anything. An hour later you're back outside with a group photo and stories already forming.
3:30 pm · Craft beers and debrief
Head to the Frog & Rosbif or one of the pubs around Place de la Victoire, a few minutes on foot. This is where each team reconstructs what happened, where the excuses start piling up, and where the person who panicked first spends the next hour explaining why it actually wasn't their fault.
6:00 pm · Rooftop before things escalate
The Mama Shelter and the Grand Hotel both have rooftops worth going to, and both are under 10 minutes on foot from us. This is the moment for the presentable group photo. After this point, the conditions may not be quite right for that.
8:00 pm · Dinner, Saint-Pierre district
For tapas or a proper Bordeaux table, Saint-Pierre is the spot. Again, book ahead: a group of 10 to 15 without a reservation on a Saturday evening in peak season is a tough ask in any city. Check our Bordeaux events guide for current addresses worth knowing about.
Why doing everything on foot actually matters
Clock Escape is at 36 rue du Pont de la Mousque, a 2-minute walk from the Grand Théâtre. Tram A stops 50 metres away. The entire itinerary above works without a car, without a designated driver, without anyone coordinating taxis for a group at the end of the night. For a stag or hen party, that's worth more than it sounds. The best moments of the evening tend to happen when nobody's thinking about logistics.
Things people ask us before booking for a stag or hen party
We're 10 people, can we all play together in the same room?
Our rooms are designed for 2 to 5 players each. For a group of 10, we'd recommend Duel Mode: two teams in two different rooms at the same time. We can take up to 15 players simultaneously across our 3 rooms. If you're a bigger group, give us a call and we'll work something out.
How long should we plan for in total?
The game itself lasts 60 minutes. Add 10 to 15 minutes for the welcome and briefing beforehand, plus a few minutes of debrief at the end. Block out 1h30 in your schedule, it's comfortable and gives everyone time to pay their spot without feeling rushed.
Some people in our group have never done an escape room, is that a problem?
Not at all. Honestly, first-timers often do surprisingly well because they don't have bad habits from previous games. The Spy is well-calibrated for mixed groups: people who've never played find their footing quickly. Our game master is there throughout and can give hints if the group gets stuck. It's not a competition, the point is for everyone to have a good time.
How does payment work for a large stag or hen group?
You book by paying only your own spot. Everyone else pays theirs directly at the desk when they arrive, by card or cash, however they prefer. No transfer to organise in advance, no covering the whole group upfront. We set it up this way specifically because we kept seeing organisers arrive stressed about something that had nothing to do with the escape room.
The Spy or The Cursed Temple for our group?
For a mixed group with first-timers, or if you're not sure of everyone's level: The Spy. For a group that wants to push themselves physically and isn't bothered by intensity: The Cursed Temple. If you're genuinely unsure, call us on +33 5 35 54 28 29. A quick conversation is usually enough for us to tell you which room fits your group.
